Escape to this delightful detached holiday cottage, part of the Old Inzievar House estate which is situated in beautiful and natural parkland, on a working beef farm, about six miles west of Dunfermline and 1 mile from the historic Culross village and Abbey on the Forth Estuary.The house has its roots in the 17th century, and the early coal mining and iron works industry of the area. The walled garden on the estate, originated in the 18th century, as can be seen by its large walls. However, little was left when the current owners arrived in 2003, and both the walls and garden have been restored. It featured in both the Scotsman on Sunday in 2013 and also in Scottish Field in 2015 and has been in the Scotland’s Garden Scheme for a number of years. The original family outgrew the main house in the 1850s and moved ’up the hill’ and built the larger Victorian mansion, Inzievar House, designed by the famous Scottish architect, David Bryce. ’Old’ Inzievar House became a quiet dower house, albeit with a large drawing room wing, added by Bryce at the same time. It remained secluded and peaceful in its setting. Jules Verne, on his Scottish tour, visited the estate and the owners, the Smith Sligo family, in 1859. He describes the walk from Crombie Point and the environs in great detail. He marvels at the ’modern’ designs by Bryce. He was invited by a family member who was a Catholic priest, later Archbishop of St Andrews. The links with the local Catholic community remain strong to this day with nearby Holy Name church, with some stunning stained glass windows designed by Gabriel Loire in 1956, built and donated by the Smith Sligo family, as well as St Margaret’s in Dunfermline. A small group of Carmelite nuns lived in the house in the 1900s.This rural haven has excellent access to dog friendly walks, cycle paths, and outdoor amenities, but within easy access of Edinburgh 24 miles, Perth 33 miles and Stirling 18 miles. Shop 1½ miles, pub and restaurant 2 miles.
