Choosing Newtonmore as your base for a Scottish Highlands’ holiday is a choice well made. It’s a brilliant, vibrant, Highland village in the Cairngorms National Park with places to eat and drink within a short walk. There’s also a great golf course in Newtonmore, in fact, Craigerne is adjacent to the first tee, with views across to the Cairngorms! In the village, you will find a bowling green and tennis courts. For those who like fishing, the River Spey is a couple of minutes’ walk away and very good value to fish for trout and salmon in season, excellent value through the Badenoch Angling Association. The walking is outstanding and there are paths to enjoy in every direction. The Highland Folk Museum is also only a short walk away on the edge of the village, and it’s well worth the trip to learn more about life in the Highlands in the 18th and 19th century. The replica village was also used as a location for Outlander in Series 1.
Further east and down river, there are the villages of Kingussie and Aviemore. Aviemore has many shops, bars, restaurants and cafés to enjoy, but it’s the outdoor options that really excite. Cairngorm Mountain and its ski station are a big draw through the winter months, so too are the Cairngorm reindeer herd and also the winter trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Craigerne is an excellent place to stay year round. Craigerne also works as a place to break up your journey as it’s only just off the A9. So if you’re on a Scottish Highlands tour, and want to see the Cairngorms before driving over to the Isle of Skye, Fort William, or north to Inverness and the Northern Highlands, Craigerne is the perfect place. It offers very comfortable accommodation with the rare luxury of an en-suite shower room for each bedroom. Beach 20 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 300 yards.
