Backaskaill Cottage is a wonderful, cosy home away from home on the island of Sanday in the Orkney Islands. A one-bedroom traditional farm-servants’ cottage dating from the early 1800s, it is situated in one of the most incredible and remote locations in Scotland. It is nestled in a farm steading, only a minute’s walk from a beach that feels like it’s yours and yours alone. Once you make the journey to Backaskaill Cottage on Sanday you’ll want to return again and again. The cottage has been furnished and equipped to a high standard. The owners have anticipated your every need and provided lots of special touches for a luxurious stay, including a welcome hamper of local produce. Aside from complete peace and quiet, there’s also lots to see and do across this wonderful little island. Sanday boasts outstanding wildlife on land and at sea. You can see rare birds and flora, and perhaps otters, orca, and other marine species in the crystal-clear northern waters. There is a heritage centre, craft hub, artists’ workshops, archaeological sites, independent shops, a café/pizzeria, 9-hole golf course, an abundance of brilliant walks and great cycling routes. Fishing on the nearby loch is free and there is plenty can be caught off the piers too. The 600-strong population of Sanday organise and welcome guests to numerous events throughout the year including fishing trips, an agricultural show, lectures, dances (ceilidhs), lighthouse and wildlife tours, and a lot more. The cottage itself is a great place to spend a week or two. It enjoys a rural aspect with views across the productive farmland. Watch the local livestock grazing from the comfortable, sunset-facing conservatory. The conservatory opens onto the back garden which is laid to lawn and exclusively for the use of cottage residents. A small, walled front yard provides a sheltered outdoor dining area. On the ground floor there’s a well-equipped kitchen/dining room, a spacious living room with extra bed if needed, conservatory, and double bedroom with shower room. The garden is fully enclosed, but it is important to watch children and dogs because Backaskaill is a working farm. The Cottage is semi-detached with Backaskaill Farmhouse, and they can be booked in tandem to create a larger property. Equally the two properties are private as individual rentals. Beach 200 yards. The owners are equestrian sports and heavy horse enthusiasts. If you want to bring your own horse/s on holiday to enjoy long, open beach and field gallops, the property has three spacious stables and grazing in paddocks and fields. These are offered free of charge on the understanding that they are left as they are found. All bedding/feeding can be supplied at cost.
