In a peaceful and secluded valley with only sheep and cattle, this detached family farmhouse has wonderful views over open countryside.
The family is sure to be full of beans as you negotiate your way through Dumfries and Galloway. The drive alone is enough to take your breath away, with Glen Burn’s lonely farmsteads, woody copses, expansive pastureland and tumbling streams. You round a final bend and the farmhouse creeps into view over a mossy drystone wall, beaming a bright champagne-pink smile against fields of green.
Your dream holiday begins once you cross the threshold. Large picture windows look down to the floor of the valley in the living room, a cosy yet spacious area with a traditional open fire. The spacious sitting room is equally attractive, with a stripy corner sofa facing the TV. Ideal for reconnecting with your loved ones, you can play board games, read or simply chit chat long into the night.
The Glen Farmhouse can provide a real glimpse into Scottish life. Guests visiting at the end of January can celebrate the poet Robert Burns’ birthday (25th) in the traditional Scottish manner (after all, when in Rome do as the Romans). The contemporary, Aga-fitted kitchen will help make light work of preparing Burns Supper, which comprises haggis, neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes), followed by a wee dram of Scotch and reciting some of Burns’ poetry.
Upstairs, the bedrooms are bright, the bathrooms spacious, and the views are to die for. 6000 acres of grounds belonging to the Lincluden Estate cocoon the property from all sides, which make for some of the finest walks in the region. The property has a small lawned garden backed with towering Scots pines, and in the fields beyond, you’ll find that the locals are friendly enough (just don’t expect the conversation to stretch beyond the odd bleat and the greeting ‘moo’). Nearby Glen Kiln Loch offers some fantastic fishing, with the first day free of charge.
