Derwent Apartment is a special kind of holiday home. Converted from the old Victorian servants’ wing of Kinmount House with help of a local architect, the apartment is one of eight equally charming holiday cottages set around a courtyard.Suitable even for the ‘Goldilocks’ sort, the apartment is the perfect size for groups of six (not too big and not too small), balancing contemporary features with its old-world charm. Cosy yet spacious, the living room is minimalist in design, boasting elegant décor, soft maroon sofas set around a ‘coal-effect’ fire, with endearing artwork adorning the walls. The calm, pleasant mood is most profound – it’ll have you feeling right at home in a matter of minutes. Bright and fully fitted with granite worktops, the corner kitchen helps make light work of supper for the whole family, and the master bedroom features a four-poster bed clad in lavish throws. The property also boasts a superb little suntrap outside, complete with table and chairs.Another great feature to staying in one of these properties is that guests have access to the estate’s fine facilities. These include an indoor heated swimming pool with changing facilities, a sauna, well-stocked gym and a games room with pool table. Kinmount Castle also has exclusive use of the salmon beats on the Rivers Nith and Annan, and the famous Barjarg beat (seasonal, at cost). If you’re a novice hand at fishing, one-to-one tuition can also be arranged. Outside are an expansive 3 acres of grounds comprising azalea and rhododendron-studded gardens which come alive with colour in the summertime. The grounds also enjoy unbroken views over the lake to the hills beyond the Solway Firth.Activities in the region include sailing, water sports, horse riding, golf, fine shopping in the nearby towns and a selection of eateries and welcoming pubs. Powfoot, 2 miles, was created as a sea-bathing resort by the owners of Kinmount House and dates back to the 1790s. There’s a selection of ancient sites nearby including Rammerscales, a Georgian house that is thought to date back to the 1760s, Ecclefechan, the birthplace of Thomas Carlyle, and Caerlaverock Castle, which paints a vivid picture of the Border Wars. The property is sure to delight birdwatchers with Caerlaverock just 8 miles away, which comprises 13,000 acres of National Nature Reserve, home to a diverse variety of flora and fauna, including greylag and pink-footed geese in the autumn and winter.Sure enough, this property is ‘just right’ for all manner of holidaymakers.
